The RARE Manifesto – The finishing straight
September 13, 2010Improve customer service by getting back to basics
September 15, 2010This post follows on from a post that I wrote a couple of weeks ago called Has social media helped you find your niche? and expands on part of a list post called Social Media for My Business: 16 Lessons Learnt so Far that I wrote back in June, in which I started to talk about some of the things that I had learnt on my blogging and social media journey over the last few months.
Today’s post is the last in the series expanding on points made in the original post and focuses on how social media is no different to real life and real relationships.
The lessons that I want to talk a little about today:
- Spamming your readers = no traffic – be social and act social. You wouldn’t/don’t sell to your friends, do you?
- Not everyone is going to like you – there is so much truth in the variation of the old saying ‘You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time’
Here’s what those two things have meant for me:
- There is a phrase that captures how I feel about spam and that is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. I think this sums up how I feel completely. If I don’t like to be spammed then why would I expect that my readers or customers would like to be spammed. Therefore, I try not to spam people or be spammy. If I cross the line I hope that you would let me know.
- The second thing I also realised is that different people have different likes and tolerances. That said I can only be true to myself and realise that I will never fit with everyone, some people will like what I have to say and others won’t and that’s ok. Reminds me of Marmite, which despite the fact that it might be good for you, you either like it or you don’t (personally, I can’t stand it).
What do you think? Do you find that you get a Marmite reaction to some people in Social Media?
Thanks to Estherase for the image.
